
Apple Brown Betty
Classic American apple brown betty with layers of buttery breadcrumbs and spiced tart apples. A comforting baked dessert perfect with cream or hard sauce.

Prepare crumb mixture
Mix crumbs and butter lightly with fork.

Layer bottom
Cover bottom of buttered baking dish with crumbs.

Add first apple layer
Spread half the apples over crumbs.

Season first layer
Sprinkle with half the sugar, spice, lemon rind and juice mixed together.

Repeat layers
Repeat apple and seasoning layers, then cover with remaining crumbs.

Add water
Add hot water.

Bake
Bake 40 minutes at 350°F. Cover at first so crumbs don't brown too rapidly.

Serve
Serve with cream or a hard sauce.
